Tags: annual linen volume, the construction your wash and finishing process demands — ironing and calendering punish a tag differently from washing alone — and whether a logo or customer code is printed on the tag face. Hardware: the number of read points, how many antennas each portal needs, and whether your wiring suits Ethernet, PoE or WiFi. Software: whether your existing linen or hospital system can consume the reads, or something has to be built. Minimum quantities and per-piece rates are confirmed in the quote. Custom tags typically run a five to ten day turnaround depending on customisation and volume. Send your volumes, wash and finishing temperatures and a floor layout to get a firm number.

Usually most of it, and the limit is not the reader. Passive UHF — EPC Gen2, published as ISO/IEC 18000-63 — suits this job precisely because it reads many tags in one interrogation, at 865-868 MHz in India. The IHZ4 fixed reader is rated at over 700 tag reads per second, so the electronics are never the bottleneck; the load is. Reads are lost to shadowing: tags buried under wet, tightly packed fabric, or pressed flat against the cage metal. Turning RF power up rarely cures that and widens the zone enough to pull in the trolley parked alongside, whereas striking the load from more angles and slowing the pass genuinely helps. Decide before go-live what happens to a cage that fails reconciliation — a second pass, or a handheld sweep — and settle your real pass rate in a trial on your own floor, since every figure of this kind is typical and environment-dependent.

In the tag data first, and on the tag face second. Each item gets a unique EPC written at issue, and the owning customer or cost centre is either built into the numbering scheme or held against that EPC in software, so an item declares its owner the moment it is read. Because every read is stamped with the point that made it, you can also show where a disputed item was last seen instead of arguing from memory. On woven tags such as the UFLT-7515, a customer code or logo can be printed on the label itself, which is what settles an argument once a bundle has already been physically mixed. Give each despatch lane its own read window so a neighbouring trolley stays out of the account, and keep a handheld reader for walking a contested bundle item by item.

The IHZ4 fixed reader exposes Java, .NET and C++ APIs as well as a Direct Post API, with RSSI reporting, antenna detection and data filtering available to suppress duplicate reads before they reach your database. At the issue bench, the UHF Desktop Reader 103 has an HID keyboard mode that types the tag ID into whichever software field has focus, so tagging and encoding can start before any integration work is finished. The IHZ4's relay outputs can drive a lamp or indicator at the read station, which gives operators a pass or fail signal without needing a screen on the floor.

As of 2026, no site licence is needed: the 865-868 MHz band used by passive UHF RFID in India is delicensed by the WPC under the 2021 short-range-device rules, which is what makes linen tracking practical here. The care belongs on the equipment instead. Insist that the reader and antennas are approved for the Indian band specifically, and be wary of grey imports — many readers also cover the 902-928 MHz allocation used in North America, and a unit left configured for that allocation is not operating on India's delicensed band.
