How RFID Fits the M2M and IoT Stack

In any M2M or IoT deployment, machines still need reliable identity data about the physical objects they act on. What is the difference between RFID in M2M and IoT?

M2M usually refers to direct, point-to-point communication between two machines, while IoT is the broader networked ecosystem of connected devices and cloud analytics. RFID underpins both by giving physical objects a machine-readable identity at the sensing edge. A reader detects a tagged item and passes that event to a controller (M2M) or a wider IoT platform for logging, alerts and analytics.

Do RFID readers need internet or a server to work in an M2M setup?

Not always for the basic trigger. Identium fixed readers have inbuilt memory, relay outputs and custom command support, so a reader can act locally — opening a gate or switching a relay when a valid tag is read — even without a live server connection. For data logging, dashboards and cross-site analytics you would connect the reader to your network, middleware or cloud.

Which RFID frequency suits M2M and IoT applications?

It depends on range and environment. Passive UHF (865-867 MHz in India) is common for M2M because it reads multiple items at a few metres cheaply; HF/NFC suits close-range, single-item interactions; and active or BLE tags suit longer ranges up to around 100 m for vehicle and yard tracking.
