How RFID Embedded Certificate Verification Defeats Forgers
A printed certificate can be photocopied, but the electronics inside cannot. In an rfid embedded certificate anti-counterfeit programme, a thin HF/NFC inlay is laminated between the paper or PVC layers during production, carrying a unique, encrypted identifier that ties each document to a record in the issuer’s database. Anyone with a compatible reader — or a standard NFC smartphone — can tap the certificate and confirm within seconds that the serial exists, matches the holder’s details and has not been revoked. A forged copy has no chip, or one whose ID does not resolve, so the fraud is exposed at the point of check rather than months later.
For most certificate work we recommend 13.56 MHz HF/NFC tags over long-range UHF (here is how the frequencies compare): the short read range is itself a security feature, preventing skimming from a distance, and the inlays sit flat inside the document. Identium supplies the inlays, encoding and HF verification readers, and can integrate the lookup with your existing student, HR or records system — giving universities, courts and training bodies a tamper-evident audit trail for every document issued.
