On-Metal (Anti-Metal) UHF RFID Tags Built for Steel Assets
As an on-metal RFID tag manufacturer in India, Identium engineers anti-metal UHF tags that keep working where ordinary labels fail. The physics is simple: a passive UHF antenna is tuned to radiate in free air, so when you fix a standard tag straight onto steel or aluminium, the metal reflects and effectively short-circuits the antenna field. This pushes the tag’s resonant frequency away from India’s delicensed 865-867 MHz band and drops read range towards zero. An anti-metal RFID tag corrects this by adding a dielectric spacer and a small ground plane behind the antenna, so the metal surface becomes part of the tuned structure rather than something the tag fights against.
These EPC Gen2 tags come in several form factors to suit the asset. Compact ABS or PCB hard tags fit tools, jigs and IT equipment; longer bar-style UHF RFID tags give extra range on gas cylinders, pallets and heavy machinery. Industrial variants are ultrasonically welded and epoxy-potted to stand up to vibration, wash-downs, solvents and temperature swings on the shop floor. Every unit is tested in-house before dispatch.
Common deployments include RFID tool tracking, plant asset tracking, returnable containers and bins, and cylinder management for oil and gas operators who need genuinely rugged tags. Read range depends on tag size, antenna and surroundings — typically a few metres on a handheld and more with a fixed reader and antenna.
