How to specify an HLR200 gate portal
The HLR200 is a passive UHF portal — the tags a passive UHF reader works with are the EPC Gen2 class, also published as ISO/IEC 18000-63 and marketed as RAIN RFID. It operates in India’s licence-exempt UHF RFID band, 865–868 MHz, widened from the 865–867 MHz of the 2005 Rules by G.S.R. 853(E) of 10 December 2021, so a tender or BOQ still quoting 865–867 MHz is citing a superseded figure; our RFID frequencies page sets out the channel plan. Allocations do get revised, so confirm the current position with WPC before a specification is frozen. Passive UHF suits a walk-through portal because it reads at doorway distance with no scanning action from staff. It is not the only route. For libraries, HF 13.56 MHz (ISO 15693) gates remain the long-standing standard and can decide from the tag’s own security bit without a database lookup — we lead with HF for libraries unless a specific requirement points to UHF, and our library management system page covers both. And if the requirement is to identify a person at that door, a hands-free portal logs the tag that passed, not who carried it; a deliberate card tap is HF ISO 14443 (Mifare, DESFire) on an HF reader.
Containment matters more than maximum range
The up-to-4 m figure across the portal is typical and environment-dependent, not a target to design to. A gate that genuinely reaches 4 m will also read a trolley parked behind it, and stray reads are a more common cause of gate trouble than missed ones. That is why the HLR200’s two-way In/Out direction sensing earns its keep alongside the range: a read the software can place on one side of the portal is far easier to act on than a bare tag sighting.
India’s Table IV permits 2 W e.r.p. only in four channels of up to 200 kHz centred at 865.7, 866.3, 866.9 and 867.5 MHz — not across the whole band — with no more than 4 s continuous transmission on a channel and at least 100 ms between bursts, while the tag replies at only about −20 dBm e.r.p. The weak link is the tag’s answer, so tag choice and orientation usually move the result more than reader settings do.

Clear doorway width and height, single or double leaf, number of lanes, what is tagged and of what material, items expected per pass, the software it must report to, and whether the gate must also drive a turnstile or your existing access panel. If it must, the IHZ4 is often the better base, since it carries relay outputs and Wiegand for exactly that, where the HLR200’s own outputs are its LED, industrial alarm and buzzer. The common mistake is ordering the portal first and choosing tags afterwards — do it the other way round.
