RFID Inlays: Wet and Dry Formats Explained

An RFID inlay is the working heart of a smart label — an antenna and chip bonded to a thin PET substrate. When comparing RFID inlays, wet and dry are the two formats on offer, and the right pick depends on how you convert or apply them. A dry inlay ships without adhesive: it is meant to be laminated between facestock and liner, or embedded into cards, tickets and hang tags during converting. A wet inlay adds a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer and a release liner, so it can be peeled and applied directly to cartons and cases, or fed into an RFID label printer for on-demand printing and encoding.

Both formats are offered across the UHF (865–867 MHz for India) and HF/NFC bands, with a range of antenna designs, sizes and chip classes to suit different read ranges and mounting surfaces. To weigh the constructions sensibly, it helps to understand the different RFID tag types first. Every inlay is tested in-house before dispatch. Share your facestock, converter and read-range requirements and our team will recommend a suitable wet or dry inlay.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between wet and dry RFID inlays?

A dry inlay is an antenna and chip on a PET substrate with no adhesive; a wet inlay adds a pressure-sensitive adhesive and release liner so it can be peeled and stuck down, or converted into finished labels. Dry inlays are usually laminated or embedded during label and card production, while wet inlays are ready to apply directly.

Should I choose a wet or dry inlay for my application?

It depends on your process. Choose a dry inlay if you laminate or embed inlays into your own facestock, cards or tickets. Choose a wet inlay if you need to apply the tag directly to a carton, case or product, or run it through an RFID printer that prints and encodes. Share your material and read-range needs and we can recommend a fit.

Which chips do Identium RFID inlays use?

Common UHF options include Higgs 3/4 and Monza 4/5/R6 class chips, selected to match the read range and memory your application needs. HF/NFC inlays are also available for short-range use. We help you match the chip to your surface and read distance.

Can wet RFID inlays be used with a standard RFID label printer?

Yes. Wet inlays with adhesive can be fed into RFID label printers from brands such as Zebra, TSC and Honeywell that both print and encode. Dry inlays are typically laminated into a label first. Confirm the inlay size and antenna position suit your printer's encoding zone before running a large batch.

Is Identium an RFID inlay manufacturer in India?

Yes. Identium Tech Solutions is a BIS-certified RFID manufacturer in New Delhi, supplying inlays across India and for export. Our UHF products operate on the WPC-approved 865–867 MHz delicensed band, and every inlay is tested in-house before dispatch. Contact us with your specification for a manufacturer quote.
