Stick a normal RFID label on a steel cabinet and it will barely read a hand’s width away — if at all. Metal and liquids are the two things passive UHF tags hate most, and unfortunately that describes most of what factories, workshops and data centres actually want to track. The fix is not more reader power; it is the right tag. Here is how on-metal and rugged tags work, and where each belongs.
Why ordinary tags die on metal
A passive UHF inlay is tuned to radiate efficiently in free air. Place it flat against metal and the surface reflects and short-circuits the antenna field, detuning the tag so it stops responding. Liquid does the opposite — it absorbs the energy. Either way the read range collapses. This is physics, not a defect, and no amount of fiddling with reader settings reliably fixes a plain label on a steel asset.
On-metal tags are designed for the surface
On-metal RFID tags solve this with a built-in spacer and a ground plane that actually uses the metal as part of the antenna system, turning the enemy into an ally. The result is dependable reads from a tag mounted directly on tools, racking, machinery, IT hardware, gas cylinders and vehicle chassis. For assets that also take knocks, heat, chemicals or wash-downs, our rugged RFID tags add sealed, impact-resistant housings — and for everything that is not metal, standard UHF hard tags remain the economical choice. Matching the tag to the surface is the single most important decision in an asset project.

On-metal tags read the same way as any UHF tag: fixed readers and antennas at a doorway capture assets as they move, while a handheld UHF reader handles audits, locating and spot checks across a plant.
