RFID Manufacturer India vs China: A Buyer's Comparison

Ask the RFID manufacturer India vs China question in 2026 and you are usually asking two things at once: who is cheapest, and what happens if this route is disrupted. Procurement teams that spent a decade defaulting to a single Asian supply base are increasingly being pushed toward the second question. China-plus-one — keeping an established Chinese supplier while qualifying a second source elsewhere — is a widely reported procurement pattern rather than something we can put a number on, and RFID hardware sits inside it. Tags, readers and cards are components in a larger system: a stock-out at the tag level halts a warehouse as effectively as a missing motor.

Treat what follows as a comparison, not an argument. China has one of the deepest and most mature RFID supply chains in the world, with excellent factories operating at a scale no other country currently matches. India is a smaller but growing manufacturing base. Both are true at once, and the variance between two factories in the same city is usually larger than the average difference between two countries. Strong suppliers and weak ones exist in each.

The dimensions buyers actually weigh

Where China typically has the advantage

Be honest about this before planning a second source. A diversification plan that ignores these strengths will fail commercially.

Scale. A factory running the same SKU continuously carries less setup cost per piece, holds more inventory and absorbs a demand spike without renegotiating. On repeating high-volume orders of standard UHF tags and labels, that is hard to beat.

Component depth. When the inlay, the resin and the converting equipment sit within a short radius, a substitution or redesign is a phone call rather than an import cycle. That shows up as speed, not only cost.

Unit cost at the top of the curve. At high volume on commodity SKUs, the cost gap is real and should be expected.

Breadth of stock SKUs. If an existing catalogue item meets your requirement, a supply base with thousands of stocked variants will usually ship faster and cheaper than one that has to make it.

Where an Indian supplier can win

Smaller runs and mixed SKUs. Pilots, multi-site rollouts with different tag types, and programmes that reorder in the low thousands rather than the hundreds of thousands often fit a mid-sized plant better than a volume line. A direct engineering conversation. Read-range problems are rarely solved by a catalogue. They are solved by someone asking what the tag is mounted on, how far the reader sits and what is between them. Having that exchange in English, without an intermediary, shortens the loop.

Time-zone overlap. An Indian working day overlaps a European or Gulf one substantially, so a morning question is usually answered the same day rather than the next.

Genuine diversification. This is the point of the exercise: a second source in another country, on different freight lanes, under a different trade regime, is insurance. If you already import other categories from India, consolidation may add to the case.

Tariffs and trade exposure: understand the concept, verify the numbers

Country of origin changes the duty treatment of an imported good, which is part of why the sourcing question is being asked at all. We will not quote you a number, and be sceptical of any supplier who does.

Duty treatment is determined in your destination country, not at the factory gate. It depends on how your customs authority classifies the product, on the declared country of origin, on whether a preferential trade agreement applies and whether your shipment meets its origin rules, and on trade measures that can be introduced, revised or withdrawn. RFID goods can fall into more than one plausible classification, and a passive label may be treated differently from a powered reader.

Verify current classification, duty rates and any applicable trade measures with your own licensed customs broker in the destination country before comparing prices. A supplier declares a code on the commercial invoice; the classification and the liability are yours. How to run a fair trial

Qualify a second source as a controlled test, not a price comparison.

  1. Send the identical specification to both. Same chip or chip family, memory, dimensions, housing material, encoding scheme, artwork, quantity and Incoterm. Different specifications produce different prices, which tells you nothing.
  2. Read-test samples on your own material. Not on a bench or the supplier’s test asset — on your metal, your liquid-filled container, your fabric, at your real reader height and orientation. A tag that reads at several metres in free air can read at a small fraction of that once it is mounted on your metal or sitting beside your liquid.
  3. Compare total landed cost, not unit price. Unit price, tooling and setup amortised over your real annual volume, freight, insurance, duty and taxes as confirmed by your broker, inspection, and an allowance for rework.
  4. Check certification against your destination market, not a general claim. Ask which specific marks a supplier holds, ask for the documents, and confirm what your market requires with your national regulator.   5. Judge behaviour, not only output. How a supplier handles a failed sample lot, a chip substitution or an awkward question predicts more about a three-year programme than the first quotation does. The tag manufacturer selection checklist turns that into questions you can send.
