Every month, RWAs and facility managers ask us for a “boom barrier with FASTag” for their society gate. The requirement is simple: the barrier should lift automatically for resident vehicles, stay down for everyone else, and stop depending on a guard recognising cars. There are two genuinely different ways to get there — one piggybacks on the FASTag sticker already on the windscreen, the other uses the society’s own UHF windshield tags. This guide explains both routes honestly — including which one Identium supplies and which one we do not — and then breaks down what actually decides the price of a lane.
What a “FASTag boom barrier” actually is
A FASTag is a passive UHF RFID sticker issued by banks under NPCI’s National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) programme. At a toll plaza, a gantry-mounted reader reads the tag and the NETC system debits the linked account — we have covered the radio side in our explainer on how FASTag works.
At a society gate there is no toll to collect. The tag purely identifies the vehicle: a UHF reader reads a windscreen tag, checks it against an approved list, and pulses the boom barrier open through a relay. The real question is which tag it reads — and that is where the two routes split.
Route 1: reading the resident’s existing bank FASTag
Since most cars in India already carry a FASTag, the obvious idea is to read that same sticker at the society gate.
The advantages are real. Nothing new to issue or affix; enrolment is capturing each tag’s ID against a flat number; and residents cannot forget a card at home, because the tag lives on the windscreen.
The caveats deserve equal attention:
- It is a bank/NPCI ecosystem. FASTags are issued by banks under NPCI programmes, and formal FASTag-based parking — where validation or payment runs through the NETC system — is typically rolled out through banks and their authorised partners. Identium is not an NPCI or bank partner and does not issue FASTags, so we do not supply this route. For NETC-linked entry or paid parking on FASTag, your starting point is your bank or an NPCI-authorised parking operator.
- The tag lifecycle is out of your hands. If a bank replaces or reissues a resident’s FASTag, the ID changes without notice, and that vehicle is suddenly “unknown” at your gate until it is re-enrolled.
- Coverage is incomplete. A visitor’s FASTag is not on your whitelist, so the guest flow still needs a separate answer — and two-wheelers usually carry no FASTag at all.
Some integrators run an informal version: any WPC-approved UHF reader can read a FASTag’s ID as a plain identifier against the society’s own whitelist, with no NETC involvement. This works technically, but every dependency above still applies — you are building access control on tags a third party issues, replaces and controls.
Programme note: FASTag issuance, NETC parking pilots and related rules are governed by NPCI, member banks and the concerned authorities, and they change from time to time. Route 2: dedicated private UHF windshield tags (Identium’s route)
The alternative is for the society to issue its own tamper-evident UHF windshield tags — the same passive UHF technology, but tags the RWA owns end to end.
- Full lifecycle control. Issue a tag on move-in; deactivate it the moment a car is sold or a tenancy ends. Owners, tenants, staff vehicles and school vans are just categories in your own database.
- Tamper evidence. The tag destroys itself if peeled off, so it cannot migrate to a second car — closing the “one sticker, three vehicles” loophole.
- Guest handling. Pre-approved visitors get temporary tags or printed labels that expire automatically, instead of the guard hand-raising the barrier all day.
- No third-party dependency. No bank, no NETC, no reissue surprises — and vehicles without a FASTag can still be enrolled.
At the gate, the hardware is either a purpose-built gate reader such as the HLR200, or a fixed reader (Impinj R2000-based, up to 33 dBm) driving an external antenna per lane. What decides the price of a lane
We deliberately do not print a “per lane” figure here — real quotes vary too much with site conditions and volumes for a blog number to be honest. These are the drivers a genuine quote is built from:
- The reader. An integrated gate reader with a built-in antenna is the simpler single-lane choice; a multi-port fixed reader costs more up front but can serve an entry–exit pair or multiple lanes, lowering per-lane cost.
- The antenna. Gain and polarisation decide how tight and repeatable your read zone is — our RFID antenna range covers the usual gate geometries. Plan one antenna per lane.
- Barrier integration. If your existing boom barrier accepts a dry-contact trigger, integration is essentially a relay wire. If it needs a controller upgrade — or you are buying a new barrier with a loop detector — that hardware dominates the lane cost.

- Cabling, mounting and civil work. Pole or canopy mounting, power, and the network run back to the guard room.
- Software scope. A standalone whitelist inside the reader is far cheaper than full parking software with resident apps, guest workflows and reports.

How boom-barrier integration actually works
Nothing exotic. UHF readers expose GPIO/relay outputs. When the reader — or the controller running the whitelist — confirms an authorised tag, it closes a potential-free relay contact wired into the barrier controller’s “open” input, the same input a guard’s push button uses. The barrier’s own loop detector and safety logic keep handling closing and anti-crush behaviour. Most standard boom barriers sold in India accept a dry-contact trigger, so you can usually keep your existing barrier and add reading on top.
Mistakes that sink society gate projects
- Loose read zones. A carelessly aimed antenna reads the adjacent or exit lane, and barriers open for the wrong vehicle. Tune power and placement per lane at commissioning.
- Plain stickers instead of tamper-evident tags. Non-destructible tags migrate between vehicles within weeks.
- No guest flow decided upfront. If visitors have no defined path, guards bypass the system and discipline collapses.
- Skipping the site survey. Metal canopies and reflective surfaces reshape read zones in ways a datasheet will not predict.
